Sound Cloud Sunday May 23, 2021

As we head into the summer #laurelcanyonsound not withstanding, it is looking safer to go out into the real world.  That is evidenced (on some level) by reintroducing “the next time in LA” segment of our post.  Both Durand Jones & The Indicators and Bob Malone will venture out and regale us with live performances here in LA in the near future.  In addition, listen to the full episode either on our app or right here:

Alex Cuba – Hablando x Hablar

Hometown: Canada via Artemisa, Cuba

Album:   From the album “Mendo” released May 21 on Caracol Records.

Review Snippet: His sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and powerful guitar riffs, relinquish a conventional stereotype that exemplifies much of the Latin music landscape.

Robert Finley – Souled Out On You

Hometown:    Bernice, LA

Album:  From the album “Sharecropper’s Son” out May 21 on Easy Eye Records.

Review Snippet:  Throughout it’s impossible not to feel some goosebumps and chills in his poignant, raw delivery. … Finley and Auerbach vary tempos and sound and with Finley’s changing vocal treatments, the album does a nice job of blending classic blues, R&B, and soul in an inviting mix. This project will likely receive much consideration for awards and year-end lists.

Cha Wa – My People

Hometown:    New Orleans, LA

Album:   From the album “My People” released April 2 on Single Lock Records.

Review Snippet: With a musical core of Joseph Boudreaux on vocals, drummer/ founder Joe Gelini, guitarist/musical director Ari Teitel, Aurelien Barnes, the trumpeter and percussionist and keyboardist Andriu Yanovski, Cha Wa is a modern New Orleans-based band with a definite purpose. Their mission statement is to carry the torch for the traditional sounds of the Crescent City but – and this is important – though they want to help preserve musical tradition, they also know that to survive, the music needs to adapt, to move on, to evolve. Boudreaux says: “With New Orleans music, you have to keep the traditions, it’s rooted in tradition. You add your originality and connect to those roots.” With that in mind the collective has formulated a sound that skilfully melds New Orleans’ jazz roots with Cajun and Mardi Gras Indian traditions – all generously garnished with Meters style funk, second-line brass, hip-hop and smooth soul. It’s an intoxicating cocktail that was first unveiled on their 2018’s Grammy-nominated ‘Spyboy’ album and now Cha Wa continue their odyssey with ‘My People’.

Lula Wiles – Oh My God

Hometown:                Nashville via Maine

Album:   From the album “Shame And Sedition” released May 21 on Smithsonian Folkways Records.

Review Snippet: Long before they were in a band together, the members of Lula Wiles were singing folk songs and trading fiddle tunes at camp in Maine.  “All of us were lucky to have access to the folk music community at a young age,” Burke says. “The music traditions that we’re drawing on are social, community-building traditions.” Though the band’s sound continues to evolve beyond its acoustic origins, the members of Lula Wiles carry those early lessons of community and the meaning of shared art with them to this day, as they seek to create music that questions cultural virtues, brings complex experiences to light, and points toward a better world.

Deborah Crooks – New Roots

Hometown:  Alameda, CA

Album:   “Twin Lakes” ep self-released on May 21.

Review Snippet: Crooks uses her skills to build an experience that will separate her from the country pop acts growing more popular each day. Her music’s more in the vein of Johnny Cash than Carrie Underwood. With the main focus on her voice, lyrics, and guitar playing, Crooks’ latest makes for a relaxing afternoon listen.

Shay Martin Lovette – Fierce And Delicate Things

Hometown:    Boone, NC

Album:   From the self-released album “Scatter and Gather”  released May 14.

Review Snippet: You can hear traces of folk/Americana legends like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark weaved throughout the sophomore effort from Shay Martin Lovette, but just as obvious is the influence of his native North Carolina. Written primarily from a remote creek side cabin in the Appalachian Mountains, there is a stillness and serenity that knit through the 12 tracks that make up Scatter & Gather, regardless of the characters he’s singing about.

Junior Burke – Any Eyes But Mine

Hometown:    Colorado

Album:   From the EP “Nothing But” on Bongo Boy Records released in April.

Review Snippet: Burke’s work on Any Eyes But Mine is reminiscent of hearing James Taylor switch gears into a modern Americana sound. Nuanced but uncomplicated melodies and brilliant lyricism are at the heart of this warm and authentic track. The production is bright and clean, a subtle array of instrumentation that allows the song and its lyrical components to be the main focus. Straightforward and digestible, the message of losing in love is crystal clear and framed in a perfectly relatable way:

Keeton Coffman – Wounded Heart

Hometown:    Bryan-College Station, TX

Album:  From the self-released album “Hard Times” out June 18.

Review Snippet:  Growing up in Bryan-College Station, Texas, Coffman found an old Alvarez guitar in his mother’s closet behind stacks of Motown, 70s songwriters, and Tina Turner records. “My mom showed me three or four chords after I confronted her with the guitar, like, ‘Why has this been hidden in our house?’” Coffman says with a smile. An elite gymnast en route to becoming a national champion, he carried the guitar with him on long bus rides to competitions, and then west to college at the University of Texas at Austin. When an injury finally ended his athletic career at 20, Coffman immersed himself wholly in music.
