Sound Cloud Sunday May 17, 2020

We are still sheltering in place here in California but one of the beautiful moments of all of this meshigas is that favorite bands are coming together and either recording new material or new versions of old material or just putting a spin on someone else’s cool song.  The 70s pop rock band Orleans have recorded a shelter-in-place collaborative effort that we will inevitably be seeing more of in the coming months.  The original surviving members got together (well got together apart) and recorded this relatively straight on version of their classic “Still The One”.  Sometimes something comfortable is something to appreciate.  And here at Laurel Canyon Radio we understand the concept of playing music you are comfortable with.  Enjoy this track as well as a dozen other great new bits of music:

Hometown:      Wilmington, NC  From

Album:  From the album “The Yoke Is Easy, the Burden Full” self-released on May 1.

Review Snippet: ““That’s how their music feels: immediate, personal, available. They’re not purists. They’re not hip. They’re more than that: they’re North Carolina musicians, meaning they belong nowhere and everywhere at the same time.”

Sam Carter – She Brings Me Home

Hometown:      UK

Album:  “From the album “Almost Home” released May 1 on Captain Records.

Review Snippet: “Due for release May 2020, Sam’s fourth album Home Waters showcases his heartfelt songwriting with sensitive, sophisticated production. Recorded in a converted church in rural Northumberland by producer and multi-instrumentalist Ian Stephenson (Kan, Baltic Crossing, Andy May Trio), Sam’s live acoustic guitar and vocals sit at the heart of the album. Many of his performances were left unadorned, while the rich emotional landscapes on other tracks were illustrated by Stephenson’s cinematic string arrangements, performed by the specially-assembled The Home Waters String Quartet (Mark Carroll, Edward Cross, Jean-Pierre Garde, Hannah Tattersfield) with double bass players Matt Ridley and Ian ‘Dodge’ Paterson

Eileen Rose/She’s Gone and Matte Kudasi

Hometown:      Nashville via Boston

Album:  From the album “Muscle Shoals” released April 17 on Continental Records.

Review Snippet: “‘Eileen Rose – Muscle Shoals,’ may be her most accomplished record to date. It includes an “A-side” of new songs that shimmer with the brilliance and confidence of a seasoned songwriter and performer at the top of her game. There is also a bonus “B-side” of Rose’s most beloved tracks, re-recorded in those extraordinary surroundings because Eileen “fell in love with the sound of this band in that room, and I just had to.”

Established in 1969 by legendary Fame Studio session musicians, The Swampers, the iconic studio helped make Muscle Shoals the “Hit Recording Capital of the World.” Though still a working studio, MSSS is so crucial to music history that it’s also a museum. Thousands of music fans the world over come to tour this former casket factory where icons like The Rolling Stones, Linda Rondstadt, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, The Staple Singers, Rod Stewart, Leon Russell, Bob Seger, The Allman Brothers recorded some of their most beloved songs.

Modern Studies – Photograph

Hometown:    Scotland via Lancashire

Album:  From the album “Weight of The Sun” released May 8 on Fire Records.

Review Snippet: ““This excellent second album, all subtly energetic rhythms, and just-so flourishes of brass and strings, a very contemporary-feeling blend of Scottish-hued indie, jazz, folk, tropicalia – you name it… sounding like two itinerant folk singers picked up from the side of the road and whisked off down the tidy motorways of an imagined future Britain” The Quietus, Albums of the Month

Konradsen – Rodeo No. 5

Hometown:      Oslo Norway

Album:  From the EP Rodeo No 5 released May 1 on Cascine Records.

Review Snippet: “Inspired by the folksongs and hymns Sabel sang with her family as a child, and the modern pop music she and Vildgren listen to as adults, Konradsen weaves Sabel’s soulful vocals with field recordings, samples and ambient foley. These voices of past and present dance over minimalist piano, atmospheric electronics, programmed beats and organic horns, forming a sonic tapestry that foregrounds the people close to Konradsen.
