Sound Cloud Sunday – June 17, 2018 (Episode 18)

Sound Cloud Sunday  June 17, 2018 (Episode 18)

Happy Father’s Day from Sound Cloud Sunday – I hope wherever you are today you are thinking of your dad.  And if you’re Dan Auerbach producer extraordinaire and lead singer of The Black Keys, you team up with your dear old dad and produce his debut album and release it for Father’s Day and call it “My Old Man”.  Perhaps that’s overkill!

Check out great new indie music from around the globe this week featuring artists familiar and new.  Nicki Bluhm’s new single is here (sans the Gramblers) as is new music from Johnny Irion’s Sarah Guthrie-less album.

Tune and listen here to this week’s show:

Whiskey Wolves Of The West – Alexandria

Hometown:   Nashville

Album:  From the album “Country Roots”  on Rock Ridge Music.

Review Snippet:  Helping forge the creative lane now occupied by the likes of Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson also opened up a seam for the pair to charge through themselves to put forth a concisely focused, seven-track melting pot of an album aptly named Country Roots, which is set for release on March 2, 2018 from Rock Ridge Music.

Nicki Bluhm  – Battlechain Rose

Hometown:  Nashville via Lafayette, California

Album:  Her third album “To Rise You Gotta Fall” was just released June 1 on Compass Records.

Review Snippet:   TO RISE YOU GOTTA FALL is imbued with a Southern sensibility and echoes the musical heritage of that city. From the plaques on the walls for Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley to the analog tape machines, Sam Phillips Recording is largely unchanged since it was built in 1958. Bluhm made a decision to challenge herself—to leave all her old working relationships and routines behind for a fresh start.

Next Time in LA:  Playing the Strawberry Festival in Toulumne County August 30 through September 3.

Greyhounds – WMD

Hometown:  Austin, TX

Cole Woodruff – New Car

Hometown:  Indianapolis, IN

Album:  From his debut album “This One’s Gonna Hurt” released in April on Spark Joy Records.

Review Snippet:  Holding tough with audiences young and old over the years, he’s earned every listener he’s acquired from simply following his passion. Combining masterful storytelling, poignant lyrics, and powerful vocal ability, Cole’s music welcomes everyone who wants to engage. Reminiscent of 60s/70s folk, his songs are messages of hope for a weary world.

Karen Jonas – Yellow Brick Road

Hometown:  Fredericksburg, VA

Album:  From the album “Butter” (her third)  out June 1 (self-released)

Review Snippet:  If anything Karen Jonas flexes her musical muscles on Butter. The material ranges from country rockers to country ballads and big band jazz banter tinged songs to a Grace Slick infused post-hippie song. It can’t be long before a lot more people will become aware of her and more importantly her music.

Butter opens with ‘Yellow Brick Road’ and I am alright. The slightly poppy melody, the clear lead guitar sounds of Tim Bray, the warm Hammond B3 sound. On top of that all the firm, slightly rough voice of Karen Jonas creeps into my ears to settle there, tickling my musical preferences. There are days I settle for less, I can assure you. Next up is a country ballad, called ‘My Sweet Arsonist’, so soft and sweet. What ‘Wild Horses’ is to The Rolling Stones, this song can become to Karen Jonas. It has a beautiful melody, so relaxed, sung so well and a killer chorus. And, should you be wondering, this song is about sex people (and love). Yes, don’t be shocked, nearly all of us have a sweet arsonist and if you have not, I surely hope you will find him/her/neutral very soon. A complement for this original textual pun is due here. Just compare Kings of Leon’s biggest hit’s title. Hah!

Johnny Irion – Palm Springs

Hometown:  Washington, MA

Album:  From the self released “Driving Friend”  out since May.

Review Snippet:  Now and then in American culture, the written word fuses the worlds of music and literature. Bob Dylan’s Nobel Prize is only the most obvious example.  An individual singer songwriter can sometimes embody that fusion in his life and work. That’s Johnny Irion, whose family tree includes John Steinbeck and Woody Guthrie, and whose new record Driving Friend was backed by Blackwing, the artisan pencil makers with a diverse musical heritage.

The record, which includes members of Dawes, Wilco and the Mother Hips, ranges across a wide expanse of roots genres, from blues and gospel to folk and country. Whether Irion is singing about Santa Barbara, Pittsfield or the Rapture, his sharp wit, telling description and brief character studies take us to a musical hometown of his own, quite a feat for a rocker whose last record with his band US Elevator was hailed by Rolling Stone as being as “lovingly handcrafted as the jeans on the back of After The Gold Rush.”

Chuck Auerbach – Sylvie

Hometown:  Akron, OH

Album:  From his debut “Remember Me”  released yesterday on Easy Eye Sound.

Review Snippet: Yes its Black Key Dan’s 68 year old dad.   Chuck’s finely crafted and heartfelt lyrics were brought to life in 9 songs produced and arranged by his son, Dan Auerbach, at Easy Eye Sound. One of them, “My Old Man” (showcased below), is a very personal ode to Chuck’s own father Walter. Happy Father’s Day indeed.

Gareth Dunlop – The Moon And Me

Hometown:  East Belfast Northern Ireland

Album:  From the album No. 79 on Priory Records.

Review Snippet:  Each song is still incredibly solid and the chemistry of the band and the unique nature of the recording process really shines through. Gareth Dunlop is definitely one to watch from Northern Ireland.

Lachlan Bryan And The Wildes – I Hope That I’m Wrong

Hometown:  Melbourne, Australia

Album:  From the forthcoming album “Some Girls (Quite) Like Country Music (their 4th).  Self-released.

Review Snippet:  They’ve never told stories like the ones on new record ‘Some Girls (Quite) Like Country Music’. By far the band’s most ‘adult’ work, ‘Some Girls’ is a country record, but draws as heavily upon the influence of Leonard Cohen and Billy Bragg as it does Willie Nelson and Townes Van Zandt.
