Sound Cloud Sunday January 27, 2019
Almost an entire month of the new year has gone by here in Laurel Canyon and it feels like we’ve barely thrown away the wrapping paper and taken down the tree and we are hunting for suitable Valentine’s cards? With all this reverence of tradition, we haven’t had the time to revere new indie artists nearly often enough. Well here’s a lovely collection of both new music and reaching back to 1972 to take a listen to some great indie folk that hasn’t been ever committed to digital before this week. Enjoy it all!

Album:. From the 1972 album “Twice Around The Houses” released originally on RCA Records.
Review Snippet: Jonathan Kelly (real name Jonathan Ledingham) was born in Ireland in 1947. He became a very popular singer songwriter in Ireland before moving to the UK where under the management of Colin and Joanne Petersen he changed his name to Kelly and became a very popular act, especially in the folk clubs of the early 1970’s. His concerts were legendary and he stole the 1970 Cambridge Folk Festival after filling in whilst there was a PA problem. His released five albums, the most famous being the 1972 release ‘Twice Around the Houses’ also included his most famous song ‘The Ballad Of cursed Anna’ which is still being sung in folk clubs around the world to this day.

Album:. . Her 4th album, “Into The Wind” was released last week on Rebelle Road Records.
Review Snippet: Into the Blue is Wallace’s fourth album but marks her debut on the brand-new Rebelle Road label, an imprint founded by a trio of women dedicated to strengthening the California Country music community and expanding visibility for female artists in the Americana/roots genre. “They care so deeply about giving women a stronger voice in the music industry,” Wallace attests. Having spent the past six years writing songs and touring the nation – from AMERICANAFEST® to county fairs, barrooms to coffeehouses – Alice Wallace is ready to break out. “It takes bravery to ‘sail away into the blue’ and grab it,” she says. “It took me until about six years ago to finally take the plunge, quit my job and go for it. I haven’t looked back since.”
Next Time in LA: Yeehaw! Alice is at Original Mike’s in Santa Ana on February 8, Big Rock Pub in Indio on February 15 and at the Belly Up in Solana Beach on February 21.

Album: His second album “American Mayhem” was released on Sower Records on January 12.
Review Snippet: The fact that his songs tread the line between dolor and blissful jubilance so well is a testament to Dell’s deftness as a storyteller and his uncommon sensibilities as a songwriter. Having played in bands since his early teens, he has played hundreds of shows coast to coast, sharing the stage with acts like Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Brothers Comatose, The Black Lillies, Lydia Loveless, Austin Lucas and many others.

Album: From their new album out February 15 “Some Good Lives” out on February 15 on Dutch Records.
Review Snippet: “I love the harmonies of the Shook Twins, the dreamlike songs that seem somehow permeated by the American Folk tradition, without actually being part of it. They make music that twines through your soul the way vines cover an abandoned shack in the woods.” – Neil Gaiman, New York Times – Best-Selling Author

Album: Their album “Change In The Weather” was re-released on January 18 on Angel Air Reocrds.
Review Snippet: MONTANA were considered by some as the best musical act to come of out of the Big Sky State, with that quote from none other than Willie Nelson. Released in 1981, the album “Change In The Weather” features country rock from a band that were noted for their vocal harmonies.
The band became best known for their single “The Shoes On The Other Foot Tonight”. Tragedy struck in 1987 after the band had played a 4th July gig in Montana when their private plane crashed into trees after take-off killing all ten people on board, including original band members Terry Robinson and Kurt
Hometown: San Luis Obispo, CA
Album: Her second album “Tea Leaf Confessions” was self-released in November.
Review Snippet: Most of the tracks blur the line between story and song and confession, and all of them inspire to exhale and feel more human. I was raised in Northern California on Kate Wolf folk tunes and cannot help but recognize a similar authenticity in these songs.”

Hometown: Parker, CO
Album: From the album “Over The Line” released January 11 on Patuxent Music.
Review Snippet: “Jeff Scroggins and Colorado is an electrifying new band from the Rocky Mountains. Jeff is one of the world’s premier masters of the banjo and plays with a precision, drive and timing that are unequaled anywhere. Lead singer Greg Blake’s strong vocals are delivered with conviction, style and clarity. Add the talented Tristan Scroggins on mandolin, Sebie Denson’s solid bass fiddle and vocals, and the soulful fiddle of Annie Savage and you have a world class band that would add to any event, gathering or festival!”

Album: From the album “Split” released January 14 on Gumbo Marx.
Review Snippet: … From the bluesy opener “Give It a Try” to the Dylan-styled country stomp of “Danny Boy,” the Redbone-influenced ragtime guitar instrumental “Whiskey Bar Guitar” and the beautiful vocal harmonies of Simon and Garfunkel-esque “The New One for Reals,” “We’ll Meet Halfway” is a tour de force of some of the finest music the Americana genre has to offer.”

Album: From their fourth album “Sunshine” self-released in October.
Review Snippet: Over four full-lengths, including the new Sunshine, Real Ponchos—which includes singer-guitarist Emile Scott, bassist Michael Wagler, and recently enlisted drummer Adrian St. Louis—has positioned itself in cosmic country territory. That’s a rich tradition that starts with pioneers Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and runs right through new blood like Hiss Golden Messenger and Sturgill Simpson.

Album: From the album “A Different Path” self released on January 1.
Review Snippet: Produced by Steve Garrington (Low) and engineered by Jake Larson (King J-Lar), this new music comes after a six year break in recording for the band. In light of their recent celebration of ten years as a group, all three members have contributed original songs to this new effort. 11 of their own and a cover of Hedy West’s 1960’s folk lament ‘500 Miles’. ‘A Different Path’ was recorded at Sacred Heart Music Center in the Summer of 2018. It’s worth noting this record was paid for with a grant received from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council. Some additional funding provided from an online crowdsource campaign.
