Sound Cloud Sunday – January 13, 2019 (Episode 36)

Sound Cloud Sunday January 13, 2019

It’s cold everywhere across America but on Laurel Canyon Radio we try to keep you warm with some roasty-toasty harmonies of independent artists from around the globe.  We’ve made some great finds this week and we’ve brought them to you.

Ynana Rose – Stardust Firefly

Hometown:  San Luis Obispo, CA

Album:  From her second album “Tea Leaf Confessions”  self-released in November.

Review Snippet:  Most of the tracks blur the line between story and song and confession, and all of them inspire to exhale and feel more human. I was raised in Northern California on Kate Wolf folk tunes and cannot help but recognize a similar authenticity in these songs.”

Real Ponchos – Wake Up (Who’s There)

Hometown:  Vancouver, BC

Album: From their fourth album “Sunshine” self-released in October.

Review Snippet: Over four full-lengths, including the new Sunshine, Real Ponchos—which includes singer-guitarist Emile Scott, bassist Michael Wagler, and recently enlisted drummer Adrian St. Louis—has positioned itself in cosmic country territory. That’s a rich tradition that starts with pioneers Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and runs right through new blood like Hiss Golden Messenger and Sturgill Simpson.

Van William (featuring First Aid Kit) – Revolution

Hometown:  Kodiak, AK

Album: From his debut album “Countries” released last January on Fantasy Records.

Review Snippet:  Countries is an amiable chunk of Americana-folk; though written about heartbreak and political dismay, the record actually makes for very pleasant listening. Gentle and uncontroversial, Van William’s record is the perfect way for new music enthusiasts to ease their way into their annual year-long hunt for new musical talent.

Caleb Wendt – Error Of My Ways

Hometown:  Ogden, UT

Album: From his debut EP “Water River Home” self released on Christmas Day.  .

Review Snippet:  I only write and publish music from my heart and soul. My history bears a healthy amount of perspective on the struggles life throws at us, and the hard redemption road.

Adam Ezra – Find A Way

Hometown:  Boston, MA

Album:  From his solo album “Find A Way” released January 2 on TatteredStringMusic

Review Snippet: Adam Ezra considers himself an experientialist as much as a musician or songwriter. Whether it’s living out of a van, farming in Canada, relief work in Kosovo, student in South Africa, kitchen hand or carpenter, teacher, lacrosse coach, or traveler, Adam manages to cram it all into the music, always challenging our perspective and often teetering somewhere between the ballsy rocker and sensitive poet. Currently, he resides in a poorly insulated basement in Somerville Massachusetts, and incessantly writes songs.

Ruen Brothers – Aces

Hometown:  Cambridge, UK

Album:  From their album debut album “All My Shades of Blue” released in June on Ramseur Records.

Review Snippet:  Inspired by their music aficionado father who raised the duo on a steady diet of The Rolling Stones and The Everly Brothers, the two would rehearse in the family kitchen while scrounging for gigs in their blue-collar hometown of Scunthorpe, England. Laughs Rupert, “We’d walk into pubs and clubs as kids and ask the owner if we could play something for the local drunks at 2pm.” It wasn’t until a move to London and the success of their track “Aces,” a song recorded in their studio apartment, that the boys from Scunthorpe went from pub performers to BBC radio staples.

Anthony Peebles – Different Faces

Hometown: Panama City, FL

Eleanor Underhill – Stranger Things Have Come

Hometown:  Asheville, NC

Album:  From her self-released debut from October “Navigate The Madness”

Review Snippet:   The record player often spun the harmony-laden songs of Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young; Car rides featured Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, and Barbara Streisand on full blast with her mother singing harmony. Overhearing her mother practicing a repertoire of ballads to perform in the taverns of Colonial Williamsburg also had an impact on Eleanor’s musical interests.

Lucie Silvas – Black Jeans

Hometown:  London

Album:  From her third album E.G.O.  released in August on Furthest Point distributed by Thirty Tigers

Review Snippet:  There’s the Beach Boys-meet-Dusty Springfield “Girls from California,” lush harmonies wafting like fluffy clouds across a cerulean sky over the ocean waves falling towards the beach as the singer laments the objects of her desire’s fixation on the tan’n’honey’ed blond Los Angelenas. Or the garage rock/power pop punch of the looking for love, but not willing to settle “First Rate Heartbreak” that confesses preferring the title to “a second rate love.”

Monteagle – East LA

Hometown:  New York New York Justin Giles Wilcox

Album:  From the album Midnight Moon released on November 30 on Fire Talk Records.

Review Snippet:  Monteagle is the solo moniker of American singer-songwriter/ composer Justin Giles Wilcox. Known primarily for his work in the band Nassau, Wilcox’s new project blends traditional americana with some softer, more experimental elements creating a familiar yet hauntingly unique experience.

Elles Bailey – Medicine Man

Hometown:  Bristol, UK

Album:  From her second album Road I Call Home out March 8

Review Snippet: It was only in September 2017 that the Bristol-based singer and songwriter made good on the promise of her live reputation with one of the year’s most outstanding debuts across all of the roots music we now call Americana. Wildfire was an exhilarating confirmation of a unique talent, an unmistakable voice whose passionate, visceral shows have made her a favourite with devotees and newcomers alike.

Wildfire was one of that rare breed of records that broke down the barriers to win rapturous praise right across the media. “Every genre,” says Bailey with a smile. “That was such a surprise. Everyone really liked it, from roots and acoustic to rock and metal. Then the fans loved it.” The title track from the album, written with her band guitarist Joe Wilkins, had Bailey racing from Spotify novice to nearly one million streams, while the album itself is close to two million, and still the playlists come in for it.

Now, the great news for all of Bailey’s ever-expanding army of admirers is that she is all set with her follow-up statement. Road I Call Home, mostly recorded like its predecessor in Nashville with some of Music City’s top musicians, is a remarkable companion to Wildfire that retains all of the fire of the debut set, but adds new maturity, perspective and downright soulfulness.
