Sound Cloud Sunday February 25, 2018

We here at Laurel Canyon Radio couldn’t be more grateful to live in a time when there is so much amazing music in the world that is so accessible to our fingertips (and earholes).  Surely there will come a time when perhaps record labels are irrelevant and the playing field is even and everyone’s music has an audience that can be readily found.  Until this time, all hail Sound Cloud Sunday, where we break out another hour of independent wup-ass…please patronize these lovely and talented artists, go see them live (wherever they may be) and share their music with those you love (or wish you loved).

Caitlyn Smith – This Town Is Killing Me

Hometown: Cannon Falls, MN
Album: “Starfire” (on Monument Records – just released debut, she has an EP)
Review Snippet: She’s a Is it any wonder, then, that one of the centerpiece tracks on Starfire, the stinging, superb debut album from Nashville artist Caitlyn Smith, is “This Town Is Killing Me,” a fulminating acoustic ballad about Music City? The core of the song is about the indifference and struggles she has faced in her career as a songwriter (she co-wrote Cassadee Pope’s 2013 hit “Wasting All These Tears” and the Meghan Trainor/John Legend duet “Like I’m Gonna Lose You”) and as a budding solo act. But the weariness in her voice is pure reflection of the gritted teeth and frustration that so many female artists suffer at the grabby hands of label execs, PR flaks and disc jockeys

Next Time in LA: Nowhere near LA, but at Bottlerock in Napa on May 25.

Elijah Ocean – Down This Road

Hometown: Los Angeles via Hudson Valley, NY
Album: This is a new single.
Review Snippet: “Down This Road” is one of those songs that was lost to time, buried in the pages of a notebook and unlikely to ever see the light of day. Ocean penned the first verse on his couch after moving to Los Angeles in 2014, and it stopped there for a while. After multiple revisions and mental blocks over the next three years, the song was finished in November 2017 in a Las Vegas hotel room, where longtime friend and keyboardist Zach Jones helped bring it to life.

Next Time in LA:  March 1 at the Hotel Cafe

James Edwyn And The Borrowed Band – Quoting Sagan

Hometown:  Glasgow, Scotland, UK
Album: Pushing Statues (their 3rd) on Dead Records Collective
Review Snippet: The second album from Glasgow man James Edwyn and his compadres is an urgent, powerful set that isn’t afraid to reflect its classic Americana influences but marries them to that Scottish affinity for this music (think Teenage Fanclub or Cosmic Rough Riders), great songwriting from Edwyn, glorious backing vocals from Emma Joyce and excellent playing from the rest of the band. The result is the first great album of 2018.
