Sound Cloud Sunday – April 8, 2018
Sound Cloud Sunday April 8, 2018
It’s all Americana/country edition of Sound Cloud Sunday this week and it will probably come as no surprise that all kinds of torch and twang is not limited to Music Row. From the far flung corners, (mostly) far from Laurel Canyon Radio, we give you some great unsigned, should-be-signed and indie artists rocking the Southern California/Americana/harmony sounds fresh out of the box.
Hometown: Los Angeles
Album: Self-titled debut (self-released)
Review Snippet:
“One of the long-standing legacies of folk music is a political language. Protest runs in the veins of folk. That comes through in this gospel laden tune from Faultlines. You’ll hear incredible vocals and a southern gospel feel that sends chills right up your spine
Next Time In LA: Whiskey A Go-Go April 9, and on the stage at Downtown Disney in Anaheim in April and May.

Hometown: Ketchum, ID
Album: “Steady Your Aim” (self-released just out)
Review Snippet: When you hear Sheppard’s voice, its high whine sets it apart right away from the deep, gravelly kind that you associate with most outlaw country. His richly layered accompaniments belie the standard country sound too, but mostly apparent is his natural gift for damn good songs. “Steady Your Aim’ is full of them.
Next Time In LA: Today (April 8 at the Roots Roadhouse Festival at the Echoplex in Echo Park)

Hometown: Glasgow, Scotland
Album: “Seamonster” (her second album – self-released)
Review Snippet:
The record seemingly shape-shifts from track to track, with ‘Road’ being more of a blues-lite style to the intro song, and the title-track ‘Seamonster’ being a gorgeous folk-y tune. The sheer range of her ability is astounding, as she nails each song’s vibe with perfect execution.

Hometown: Nashville, TN
Album: “Puxico” (released last year on GetWrucke Productions)
Review Snippet: The album’s aesthetic, which hews far closer to Americana rock than it does the radio-ready country for which Hemby become known. Unfortunately that means you won’t hear these particular Hemby tunes on your FM dial anytime soon, but that’s radio’s loss. Puxico shows a country songwriter at the top of her game, even if it isn’t at the top of the charts.

Review Snippet:Culberson County,’ a slow-burning ballad about heading west, may be the only song in existence to pair spacey, Pink Floyd-esque slide guitar with a truly Texas pronunciation of the word ‘coyote.’”

The band encompasses heartfelt, yet uptempo songs showcasing fiddle, blues harmonica and big anthem toplines.
