Sound Cloud Sunday April 25, 2021

We are inching toward something looking like normalcy…I think.  I see shows happening, I see a slate of new music coming out presumably supported by shows and announcements of tours.  Fingers crossed here @laurelcanyonradio for more visibility…but until then…another raft of lovely independent music from around the globe.  Mangia!

The show that aired live on Laurel Canyon Radio is right here…..

Jared Feinman – Butterflies And Blues

Hometown:  Philadelphia, PA

Album:     From  the album “Love Is An Obstacle” released in February on West Philly Records.

Review Snippet:

Singer-songwriter Jared Feinman, whose new album Love Is An Obstacle dropped February 12, is one of those select musical artists that not only can brilliantly and seamlessly move from genre to genre on his individual songs but can also do it effectively within a single particular song. Such is the basis for much of the distinctiveness and greatness of the artist and this album, his first.

With this in mind, while listening to Feinman’s dazzling compositions, one would be hard-pressed to pin him down to any one of the genres you may hear in the eclectic mix that he offers up on this record.

What is apparent however is that Feinman is a superior talent whose musical and lyrical expressions lie somewhere at the glorious intersection of blues, jazz, folk, pop, gospel, soul, and Broadway show tunes.

Cory Hanson – Paper Fog

Hometown:

Album:     From the EP “Angeles” released January 13 on Drag City Records.

Review Snippet: Pale Horse Rider is Hanson’s second solo release following 2016’s The Unborn Capitalist From Limbo, an album of lushly orchestrated psych-folk lullabies that—like much of Wand’s output up to that point—still betrayed Hanson’s pedigree as a Ty Segall acolyte. But just as Wand eventually found their own voice, Pale Horse Rider finds Hanson evolving into a different kind of singer-songwriter. He’s expunged the last vestiges of arch, Brit-tinged glamminess in his voice for a honeyed cosmic-Americana croon and blown open the claustrophobic chamber-pop of Unborn Capitalist to bask in vast desert skies.

Yola – Diamond Studded Shoes

Hometown: Bristol, UK

Album:     From the forthcoming album “Stand For Myself” out July 30 on Easy Eye Sound.

Review Snippet: Although Yola grew up in the 1990s, she built her vocal approach on sounds of earlier generations: Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Mavis Staples, Ella Fitzgerald, Otis Redding, Dusty Springfield and more. “I was very isolated from the ability to absorb popular culture,” she said in a recent interview in New York. “Poverty is a wonderful isolator. If you have resources, you have access to all the latest computer games, all the latest records.”

Vinyl Arch Rodeo – See The Sun

Hometown: Israel

Album:    From the album “Herotodus” released April 23 on Pepperland Park Records.

Review Snippet:

See the Sun is this type of a song, a bit of everything.
The song was written mainly as a desire for an escapism, to get away from the constant noise around us, from the endless amounts of information we absorb, the polluted air, the stressful environment surrounding us, and the ambition to find a safe place. But it also attracted great deal of emotions.
Though in most cases we do not really pay attention to these feeling and just keep going.

Empire Of Light – Some Days (The Bourbon Song)

Hometown:  Brooklyn, NY

Album:     From a three song EP released April 2 on Diagonal Man Music

Review Snippet: Empire of Lights shot us into outer space with their single ‘Chasing Stardust’. Now they are back to muse over the wonder of life in space with ‘Across the Sky’. Continuing to use their psychedelic style, the band considers the wonder and pressure of a life away from Earth. If you are looking for a continuation of their space-rock story, they have truly delivered.

The Moon City Masters – Where You Wanna Run To

Hometown: Brooklyn, NY

Album:     Sef-released single.

Review Snippet:

The first place I would run to with a lover is a beach in Brazil, with this track, ‘Where You Wanna Run To’ by the Moon City Masters, blasting over a stereo. When this groovy track first opens, the opening chord progression pulls you into a daydream full of sunshine. Maybe you envision some rainbows cascading over the horizon. The consistent drumbeat and bassline hold you down. They made me think about casting away on an island with just this one person, never to be seen again.

Then I heard the line, “I got two tickets to the stars,” and I thought, “awww, going on a date to outer space would be SICK!” Brothers Talor and Jordan have the smoothest pair of voices, their musical journey is like a locomotive powered by butter: smooth sailin’ all the way through. Their harmonies are like the extra bubbly you find at the top of a newly opened champagne bottle. Possibilities seem endless with this track. Galaxies could be discovered upon searching for your ideal getaway to this newest single.

Approaching the hook and entering the chorus, that catchy pop sound hits all the sweet spots when thinking about the composition of a hit. The pulsating vibe makes you want to get up and dance. It feels like I’ve heard this song all of my life, but never before all at once. I could scream the lyrics at the top of my lungs and I don’t even know them yet. By this point in the song I’m ready to run through a large field, possibly even a setting like Woodstock, crashing to the ground in laughter with this unknown lover by my side, feeling the happiness evaporate off our skin like ecstasy.

Amigo The Devil – Small Stone

Hometown: Austin, TX

Album:     From the album “Born Against” released April 16 on Liars Club.

Review Snippet: Amigo the Devil is back with his second full-length album, Born Against, the follow-up to his acclaimed 2018 debut, Everything Is Fine. The Austin-based artist also known as Danny Kiranos has been winning over fans with his unique dark Americana vibe that pairs clever storytelling with an infectious musical soundtrack. While Amigo continues to tackle the macabre subjects that were featured on his first LP, Born Against offers a more introspective look at the dark side of the world.

Amy Speace With The Orphan Brigade – There Used To Be Horses Here

Hometown:  Baltimore, MD

Album:   Title track from the new album out this Friday April 30 on Windbone Records.

Review Snippet: On April 30, celebrated singer-songwriter Amy Speace will release her eighth album, There Used to Be Horses Here, which features “songs that I wrote in between my son’s first birthday and my father’s death, so most of the songs either relate to my dad or my son,” Speace says. “I had a baby when I was 50 years old, so when my son was born, I definitely had that experience of, ‘My parents are not going to see him grow up.’ And then my dad died.” As a result, she says, “I think the overarching theme of the record is grief meets hope.”

RX Bertoldi – Sleepwalking

Hometown:  Seattle, WA

Album:     Self-released single.

Review Snippet: Bob’s latest single is a dynamic, unvarnished and largely solo
acoustic effort. The fresh track reads and sounds like a heartfelt,
wistful acknowledgement of the protagonist’s inability to properly
grieve the early loss of his father, and the several years of flawed
thinking and poor decision making that followed. Whether the stretch
of self-confessed unawareness is autobiographical or not, Bertoldi
himself clearly woke up on the right side of songwriting.

Bob capably handles nearly all the instruments on “Sleepwalking”,
including the guitars, vocals, drums and percussion. Only the bass was
recorded at a distance by Seattle maestro Keith Lowe, and his notes
lock in just right with Bertoldi’s basic but full-bodied drumming to
give an appropriately strong foundation to this confessional stroll.
It was mixed by acclaimed Seattle guitarist & producer Johnny Sangster
(Case/Lang/Veirs Neko Case, Tripwires) & (Mudhoney, The Posies and

Andy Johnson – 500 Pesos To Oz

Hometown:  Upson County, GA

Album:     From the album “Help Yourself” released April 23. (self)

Review Snippet: “500 Pesos to Oz” is a song about one of Johnson’s memories of a special day in Todos Santos, BCS, Mexico. “This song is dedicated to anyone that has felt cut off from their own special happy places,” he said. “If you can use your imagination, your ‘Casa Azul’ is only a song away!”

Ariel Posen – Heart By Heart

Hometown:  Winnipeg, Canada

Album:     From the album “Headway” self-released March 4

Review Snippet: Ariel Posen is the complete package. How Long is an extremely well crafted debut album from an artist who should certainly garner a lot of attention in the coming years. Posen is an outstanding guitar player, but he has the vocal chops and songwriting prowess to back it up. How Long successfully blends blues, rock, R&B, and even a bit of country to deliver one of the best debut albums we’ll hear in 2019.

The Brother Brothers – A Poquito Doinha

Hometown: Peoria, IL

Album:     From the album “Calla Lily” released March 16 on Compass Records.

Review Snippet:  “With fingerpicked arpeggios, a splash of funky electric keyboard, and some close harmonies that suggest Simon & Garfunkel over Willie Nelson, the Brother Brothers offer a bittersweet ode to the touring life and days that seem long past.” – Rolling Stone Country

Britton Patrick Morgan – Bad Tom Smith

Hometown: Eastern Kentucky

Album:    From the album “I Want To Start A Band” out May 25 on Hill Country Artists.

Review Snippet: Britton delivers rough-hewn songs with a husky, authentic voice surrounded by acoustic warmth. Currently working on a new solo album, and preparing for the release of his second full-length LP, “I Wanna Start a Band,” Britton believes in the power of collaboration and has written, played with, or collaborated with many artists, including Darrell Scott, Tim O’Brien, Nolan Taylor, Malcolm Holcombe, Bill Alexander, Maine singer/songwriter Sara Trunzo, singer/songwriter Casey Lambert, Louisiana author, songwriter, and singer Yvette Landry, the Artist Paul Hassfurder, singer-songwriter Alan Rhody, and produced works for Hillhouse, the Kentucky Cowhands, Tiffany Williams, among others.

Pam Setzer – One Two Three

Hometown: Mountain View, Arkansas

Album:     From the album “Now” released last November on Englehardt Group Music.

Review Snippet: Along the way, Pam’s voice has been heard on numerous albums, with her parents and on three solo works, including her current Now CD. The 13-song Now album is a collection of Americana music containing folk, bluegrass, gospel, country, and 1930s swing.  Wow!  Pam embraces a wide variety of styles and sounds within her musical toolbox.
