Gene Clark Retrospective Coming to Laurel Canyon Radio November 17

Listen to the Gene Clark Retrospective here!

We were excited to have guest podcaster and archivist Indigo Mariana @neon_brambles bring her curation skills and love of music to Laurel Canyon Radio for a retrospective of the great Gene Clark (of The Byrds, Dillard/Clark,The New Christy Minstrels).  On the week of what would have been Mr. Clark’s 74th birthday, we had reverential tribute to this extraordinarily talented pioneer of the country-rock and Laurel Canyon Sound.  See the setlist below:

“White Light” – Gene Clark

It seems that history has finally dawned on Gene Clark’s legacy. This year alone has seen two significant archival releases – Gene Clark Back Street Mirror EP (Entrée Records) and Gene Clark Sings For You (Omnivore Recordings) along with two reissues of his best-loved albums – White Light (Intervention Records) and So Rebellious A Lover (Sunset Boulevard Records), not to mention the 50th Anniversary of his ground-breaking country-rock album The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark which paved the way for the country-rock and the modern Americana genres. All proof positive that Gene’s music is alive and well in the 21st Century.

Gene Clark began his career as a member of the New Christy Minstrels folk troupe in a Hollywood scripted scenario of being discovered at a local club in Kansas City, MO where he was pulled out of obscurity at the tender age of 18 and thrust into the limelight within days, never looking back and always moving forward. It was while he was on the road that the still teen-aged Gene first heard the Beatles “She Loves You” and was soon on his way to new territory in LA to start his own band. Inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of the Beatles he met the like-minded Jim McGuinn who was at The Troubadour putting his own spin of folk ballads with a “Beatle Beat”. Gene wasted no time and approached Jim to get something going. Enter David Crosby who liked what he heard by this dynamic duo and added his voice to make “magic” as Gene once said. They were soon joined by Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke and they eventually became the Byrds – paving the way of Folk-Rock and creating their own L.A. sound. Fame and stardom soon followed, but that was not to last. Tired by touring, jealousy from band-mates over song writing royalties and most likely the need for a bigger creative outlet, Gene soon left the Byrds to pursue a solo career in 1966, launching with the poetic single “Echoes” followed by the Gene Clark With the Gosdin Brothers LP which unfortunately did not do well commercially. In what would most likely have been songs for his follow-up album, the recent release of Gene Clark Sings For You, reveals the immense talent that Gene was maturing into. His music evolved as he did. In his brief but abundant career, Gene went from the roots of Folk to the groove of pop and the highs of psychedelia, into the origins of country-rock and the mellowness of the singer-songwriter era. Like most of his contemporaries, he struggled in the 80s, but nonetheless continued to write great songs up until his final days.

And so, this November, Gene’s birth month, we celebrate the man and his music. I am honored to have been given the opportunity to curate this show for Laurel Canyon Radio listeners. This podcast presents almost 3 hours of Gene’s finest work from his career, covering the broad spectrum of his music with some songs you may know, some you may not and some done in a way you may not have heard before. There is something for everyone. That was Gene’s gift to the world and my gift to you. Enjoy!
